What Is a Mobile Notary in Canada?
A mobile notary in Canada is a Notary Public, Commissioner of Oaths, or in some provinces a lawyer-notary who travels to clients to authenticate signatures, administer oaths, certify true copies, and notarize documents.
Notary roles differ across Canada. In British Columbia and Quebec, Notaries Public (and notaires in Quebec) are regulated legal professionals with broad authority including real estate transfers, wills, and estate matters. In Ontario, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Atlantic Canada, and the Territories, notary acts are typically handled by lawyers, paralegals, or Commissioners of Oaths.
Since January 11, 2024, Canada is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, so Canadian notarized documents can now receive an apostille for international use rather than going through traditional authentication and legalization.
