    Notary Laws in Alabama

    Alabama notary publics are commissioned by the state for a four-year term. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, a resident of Alabama or a resident of a bordering state who works in Alabama, and must not have been convicted of a felony or crime involving moral turpitude. Notaries must post a $25,000 surety bond before receiving their commission. Alabama law requires notaries to maintain a journal of all notarial acts performed. Notaries may administer oaths, take acknowledgments, and perform other duties authorized by state law. Remote online notarization (RON) is authorized under Alabama's Remote Notarization Act, allowing notaries to notarize documents using two-way audiovisual technology. Alabama notaries are prohibited from practicing law or giving legal advice.
